Video n°305 - Can we receive baptism without a priest?

Praised be Jesus Christ who associates us to His death and to His resurrection through baptism. May His grace and His peace be with you.

The law of some countries, that are enemies of Christ, prohibits baptism. It is the case in the countries that are bound by islamic law for example. And it is not an exception that the priests in these countries (when there is some), refuse to give baptism. Yet, the baptism is absolutely necessary for salvation ! Jesus said : "no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit." (John 3.5) And we can understand why He said that : as before we were conceived, we were not existing, and since this moment we started to exist, as to live in God, into the life He gave to us by the death of Jesus Christ, there must be a commencement, because we are not God. And the commencement is the baptism.

The baptism is so important for our salvation that the Catholic Church obliges the parents to baptize their children in the first weeks after their birth. Otherwise, it would be considered as a sin. The Catholic Church also recognises the validity of the baptism even when it is not given by a christened person. A non christened person only needs a few witnesses and must accept to do what the Church does : saying :"n, I baptise you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit". While saying this, they must pour water onto the person who receives baptism. That's why I propose to people who would like to receive baptism in these countries where they can't find priests to do it, to baptise each other, between them. It's not a game, it's the act by which they unify to Christ, to the mystery of His death and His rising to live, from now on, and forever, with Him, like Him, and for Him. Asking for the baptism requires however to know the word of God at least a bit that was written into the Bible, and most of all into the New Testament, and it also requires to have Faith as it is taught in the catechism of the Church and particularly into the Creed prayer.

History already shown some Churches were born, or survived, without the help of priests, but only thanks to the sacraments of the baptism and the marriage. For example, Church in Japan survived without priests, in clandestinity, from 16th to 19th centuries. We can also take the example of Churches in communist countries, but the most striking example would be the one of the Church in Korea. It was not founded by missionaries, but by the only mercy of the Holy Spirit and because some people were willing to know the Truth. Indeed, some educated people from Korea, during the 18th century, and because of the isolation of their kingdom, were searching for an explanation of the world, and they discovered christian books that were brought from Pekin by their ambassador. They became enthusiastic and wished to discover Christianism and Nik Tek Tso went to Pekin, found the bishop, received the baptism and changed is name. He became Peter. When he got back to Seoul, he started to baptise people. In spite of bloody persecutions, the Gospel was spread and in 1794 (10 years after the baptism of Peter) there was more than 4,000 catholic people. Nowadays, they are more than 6 millions.

"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16.16) He proposes to us to receive pardon for our sins and to receive the Holy Spirit by the Baptism. The baptism creates us again, for the everlasting life, by virtue of the death and the rising of Jesus, of His word that assumed our human nature.

If people knew they were condemned to Hell, they would ask to receive baptism, and they would be faithful to it, until their death.

"Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit." (John 3.5)

" Ils viennent à vous en se donnant l'apparence de moutons, mais au dedans ce sont des loups féroces " - Matthieu 7 - 15
